FROM SUNSCREENS TO THE SEA<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sunscreens\u00a0<\/strong>are complex compositions, with\u00a0UV filters<\/strong>\u00a0being the\u00a0key element<\/strong>\u00a0in the formulations reaching up to about\u00a030% in content in the final product<\/u>. In the last decades, they have\u00a0increasingly been used to protect human skin<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0detrimental effects of UV<\/strong>\u00a0radiation\u00a0<\/strong>such as skin aging and skin cancer.<\/p>\n

Because of their widespread use, UV filters have been\u00a0widely detected in freshwater and marine environments<\/strong>. These ingredients reach into the sea in two different ways:<\/p>\n

– Directly:\u00a0<\/u>Leisure activities such as swimming in lakes, rivers, and coastal areas or even sunbathing on green land.<\/p>\n

– Indirectly:\u00a0<\/u>Untreated or treated wastewater.<\/p>\n

CHANGE IS COMING<\/strong><\/p>\n

An estimated 14,000 tons of sunscreen are deposited into our oceans every year! This data has originated a deep concern about the\u00a0potential effects of UV filters on aquatic organisms<\/strong>. Consequently, countries such as Hawaii have\u00a0banned\u00a0<\/strong>two\u00a0UV filters<\/strong>\u00a0(oxybenzone and octinoxate) on\u00a0sunscreens<\/strong>, and more countries are expected to follow Hawaii’s steps in the future.<\/p>\n

TRENDS: THE RISE OF ECO-CONSCIOUS SUNSCREENS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Traditionally<\/u>, properties such as\u00a0high quality<\/strong>, a\u00a0wide variety of applications<\/strong>,\u00a0photostability\u00a0<\/strong>of the UV protection,\u00a0good spreadability<\/strong>\u00a0onto the human skin, and\u00a0excellent sensory texture<\/strong>\u00a0during and after the application have been crucial for the consumer.<\/p>\n

Recently<\/u>,\u00a0environmentally friendly and sustainable\u00a0<\/strong>cosmetics and sunscreen products have caught on, which has boosted companies to\u00a0start replacing the low eco-score UV filters<\/strong>\u00a0from their SPF formulations.<\/p>\n
